P-Traps – A Necessity, Not an Afterthought

P-Traps are essential components for HVAC systems. Installed on the condensate drain, their primary functions are to:

  • Facilitate condensate drainage from the equipment.
  • Prevent air leakage into or out of the unit.

P-Traps work by creating a water seal that prevents air from escaping the system and is crucial in maintaining proper operation of the equipment.

Failure to install a P-Trap could potentially lead to significant issues. Without a P-Trap installed, the condensate water could overflow into the unit – posing a risk of mold or damage to important components.

It is important to install a P-Trap correctly to ensure effectiveness. Proper sizing of the P-Trap is required for it to work properly and maintain its seal. A properly sized trap will account for the static pressures inside the cabinet while maintaining the air seal and allowing the condensate to drain.

AAON units are equipped with a condensate drain pan connection, but P-Traps must be provided and installed in the field. The Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Guide (IOM) manual specific to your unit provides information regarding drain pan connection details such as size and location. It also guides users through the calculation of Draw-Through Drain Trap dimensions. When consulting your unit's manual during installation, please take note of any Cautions or Warnings.
