Comparison of Legacy and the Unified Feature Strings for RN Product

The RN Series, along with other AAON product lines, have been transitioning to the unified feature string, away from the original legacy feature string.

This article will explore the distinctions between the two feature strings found in the Model Options section of the feature string nomenclature.

Key Differences in Model Options:

1. Base Model Series and Generation:

RN – 0 2 5 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

Legacy: "RN" – represents the series.

Unified: "RNA" incorporates the series, and the letter A as the current revision letter. This was created for future usage in case the series line undergoes a Major Revision that requires a new distinction.

This is not to be confused with RN series A cabinet. Both feature strings referred to the same RN Series product line.

2. Unit Size:

RN – 025 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

Legacy: This represents the tonnage size of the unit.

Unified: This represents the tonnage size of the unit.

3. Series (Unified Only)

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

This was created to denote the cabinet series – A, B, C, D, or E

4. Minor Revision (Unified Only)

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

This was created in case of a minor revision.

5. Voltage:

RN – 025 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

Legacy: This represents the voltage of the unit.

Unified: This represents the voltage of the unit.

6. Interior Protection:

RN – 025 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

Legacy: On the legacy feature string this represents if interior protection was selected. This feature was represented in the Model Options section of the feature string nomenclature.

Unified: Interior protection was moved to the Features section of the unified feature string. It can now be located under Feature 37.

7. Model Options A: Cooling/Heat Pump:

RN – 025 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

Legacy: This section represented the cooling selection. It has four-characters, each representing different parts of the cooling selections.

Unified: In the unified feature string the cooling section was expanded to five characters. This splits up some of the features that would previously be combined as one option and allows for a cleaner feature string. It also provides an easier way to expand specific options in the future.

8. Model Options B: Heating:

RN – 025 – 3 – 0 – BB02 – 384:

RNA - 025 - C - 0 - 3 - CAB0A – 00000:

Legacy: This section represented the heating selections. It has four-characters, each representing a different part of the heating selections.

Unified: In the unified feature string the heating section was expanded to five characters. This splits up some of the features that would previously be combined as one option and allows for a cleaner feature string. It also provides an easier way to expand specific options in the future.

Summary of Differences:

Extended Base Model Designation: The new unified feature string incorporates additional characters in the base model section (RNA vs. RN), as well as in the Feature section of the feature string.

Structured Segmentation: The new unified feature string was expanded, improving readability and flexibility for future updates.

Detailed Segmentation of Options: Cooling/heat pump and heating options are more detailed and segmented in the unified feature string, allowing for more precise identification of features and easier modifications.

Future-Proofing: The new string includes placeholders and additional sections for future expansion, making it more adaptable to changes and new features.

Clarity and Modularity: The new unified feature string format provides a clearer and more modular approach, facilitating easier interpretation and updates compared to the more compact and less segmented old format.
